Jazz in the Movies, Part III

For the closing night of the series (please see October 26 for Introduction, and October 27), we feature an outstanding Louis Armstrong performance in “I Can't Give You Anything But Love”; the Woody Herman band with Shorty Rodgers, Serge Chaloff, Terry Gibbs, and Bill Harris playing “Lemon Drop”; John Coltrane's Quartet with “Afro Blue”; and “Dickie's Dream” by Count Basie with Ben Webster, Gerry Mulligan, Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, and Dicky Wells. Two live performances from the Newport Festival of 1960 feature classic quintets - Cannonball Adderly in “Del Sasser” and Horace Silver's “Senor Blues.” In tribute to some of the great jazz artists who have died in recent years, there is a special memoriam series: Russell Procope in “The Mooche,” Jimmy Forrest in “Moten Swing,” Bill Evans' exquisite “I Loves You Porgy,” Mary Lou Williams in “Willow Weep for Me,” and Cat Anderson with “Jam with Sam.” These and many more selections are presented by long-time jazz-film collector, David Chertok. --Al Evers
