Jazz on a Summer's Day

Still the definitive jazz documentary, it gives us the jazz and the summer's day. Shot at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, it was the first of the modern music-festival docs, using improvised shooting techniques and atmospheric editing to capture the "feel" of the event as well as its most representative performances. "The film presents a large chunk of Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson. Monk builds a lovely version of 'Blue Monk.' Anita O'Day gives a memorable performance of 'Sweet Georgia Brown' and 'Tea for Two.' 'Rockin' Chair' receives special treatment from Jack Teagarden and Louis Armstrong. In addition, the late Eric Dolphy can be seen with the Chico Hamilton Quintet. What a movie!" (Music and the Movies, PFA '75)
