The Journey Out
Sjöberg's eye for the dark sexual aspect ofthe thriller was evident in Torment, and reappears, along with apenchant for Hitchcock and Pabst, in his next film, The Journey Out.This tightly constructed story of cowardice and its consequences takesplace in a small town on Sweden's west coast but sets its story in thelarger world of a society out of joint. Two parallel plots develop, onea thriller/romantic triangle, and the other the story of a youngNorwegian refugee trying to reach England and the RAF. As always,Sjöberg creates marvelous atmosphere and thematics with light andcomposition. The bank-robbery scene near the beginning is a knock-out.
