Jubilee

“Jubilee has a rare timeliness. It exactly catches a certain mood, a mixture of political nihilism, punk aggression and nostalgic patriotism, which is very English, very contemporary and oddly attractive. It shows an acutely sympathetic understanding, not of how people behave but of how they dream.” (Lucy Hughes-Hallett, Vogue) In 1578 Queen Elizabeth 1 (Jenny Runacre) and her court astrologer, Dr. John Dee (Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O'Brien), travel into the future to a postapocalyptic wasteland featuring outlaw girl gangs fighting media moguls and big business. Punk icons Wayne County and Adam Ant perform electrifying numbers, and Brian Eno provides his first original film score. "With Jubilee,” noted Jarman, “the progressive merging of film and my reality was complete. The source of the film was often autobiographical; the locations were the streets and warehouses in which I had lived during the previous ten years. The film was cast from among and made by friends."
