June Night
After filming the American version of Intermezzo, Bergman briefly returned to Sweden in 1939 to make June Night, her last film in her native language until The Necklace, released in 1967 (see November 4). Bergman plays a small-town girl whose attempt to end her relationship with a sailor leads to terrible violence. She begins to build a new life in Stockholm, but, as the actress herself would come to know well, there's no escaping the scandalmongering press. Bergman beautifully portrays a woman of passion and sensitivity stifled by social convention. A 1940 review declared that with her performance in this film, Bergman “establishes herself as an actress belonging to the world elite.”
