Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.
Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. is a rare exploration of the lives of young people in the inner city from the point of view of an African American woman. Through her gritty but moving portrait of Chantel Mitchell, an ambitious young woman who straddles the conflicting worlds of her job in New York's upper east side and her home in a Brooklyn housing project, writer/director Leslie Harris addresses issues that confront teens all over the country. Chantel breaks stereotypes of both class and race as Harris breaks with narrative filmmaking conventions. Not a simple heroine, Chantel is as full of self-contradictions as the world she and many other teenagers occupy, often relating them directly to the camera in mock-documentary style. Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. is always engaging and despite its gravity, never polemic.-Lisanne Skyler
