Just for the Ride
Legendary rodeo cowgirl Fern Sawyer was at the height of her career in the 1940s when the major rodeos discontinued women's cutting and roping competitions. A few years later, the Girls Rodeo Association was formed and Sawyer won enough trophies to fill most of Montana. At age 76, Sawyer still works calves on her New Mexico ranch-this after several heart attacks and hip replacements. Jan Youren, a spring chicken at age 51, might be the contemporary equivalent of Sawyer. Broken bones and all, Youren's Sixth Women's World Championship in the bronco event made her the oldest rider, among women and men, ever to win the title. Micheli's stirring Just for the Ride ropes in these two extraordinary women, flamboyant Sawyer with her fancy tooled boots and gold leather suits, and tender but tenacious Youren riding herd at her rodeo school. An aspiring bronc rider herself, the much younger Micheli learns the biggest lesson: When life throws you, you just get up, dust yourself off, and try again.
