A Just War? and Homage by Assassination

Two very different films reflect on the Gulf War, its implications and repercussions. Homage by Assassination, by Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman, takes place in his New York apartment during a long night and day of the war, as he awaits news of family and tries to come to terms with the images raging across his TV screen and through his mind. Beautifully photographed and edited, the film intercuts images of television news, Bible epics and spaghetti westerns, and the superimposed text of Suleiman's computer as he writes out thoughts and Arabic proverbs. With subtlety, tenderness and humor, Suleiman explores the painful contradictions of his Middle Eastern identity. A Just War? is a harrowing documentary that takes us into Iraq and the reality behind the high-tech Gulf War as seen on TV. A Just War? is not only about the suffering of individuals, or of a civilian population-it is about the destruction of a modern civilization. --Tod Booth
