Jørgen Roos Directs: Carl Th. Dreyer
Carl Th. Dreyer is not only an excellent introduction to the series and a fine portrait of Dreyer by Jørgen Roos, documentary filmmaker and cameraman on Dreyer's They Caught the Ferry, but an illustration of the idea that the best study guide to film is film itself. In a candid and informative interview, the eminent director discusses his style and the development of his aesthetic; Roos intercuts appropriate clips from Dreyer's films which evoke, as words cannot, the strategies of this director for whom simplicity was the most complex idea of all. The documentary begins near the end-at the premiere of Dreyer's last film, Gertrud, where Truffaut, Godard and Cluzot offer their impressions of the artist.
