A King Without a Crown
One of nine short subjects in MGM's "Historical Mystery" series (1937 to 1939). What ever happened to Louis XVII, the Dauphin and rightful heir to the Bourbon throne? Many legends say he escaped imprisonment and lived to a ripe old age. Americans dearly remember his apparition in the old con man Huckleberry Finn takes aboard his raft: "...your eyes is lookin' at this very moment on the pore disappeared Dauphin. Looy the Seventeen, son of Looy the Sixteen and Marry Antonette." Tourneur's version suggests the Dauphin may have wound up as a missionary among the Indians in the Middle West. --Robert M.
