The Kiss

Adrian was a Hollywood star, his fashions an eagerly awaited element of any film. His designs, especially those for Crawford in the thirties, had enormous clout on the retail knock-off market. But Garbo was his favorite, and he quit MGM when she did. You can see why in The Kiss. As the bored and unfaithful wife of a businessman she has precious little to do but pose, amid gorgeous Art Deco sets, in Adrian's designs that are as interesting from the back as the front. (A good thing, too, as her husband has her tailed.) Then there is a small matter of domestic murder. Even on the witness stand this woman who dares to state, "I am indifferent to public opinion," to an all-male jury wears such weird widow's weeds the court drawings are fashion sketches. Actress and model, Garbo commands the look and the gaze. (JB)
