Roman Polanski achieved international acclaim with his first feature, Knife In the Water. Visually rich, the film draws the spectator into the drama “with intrinsic cinema means. What Polanski has done is to build a small Sartrean system of tension and counter-tensions rooted in character.” (New Republic, 11/2/63)
A couple on a yachting weekend pick up a hitchhiker and, on impulse, invite him along. Once on the water, temperamental differences surface and assume vicious proportions. Competition between the two men increases but the conclusion finds the victor faced wth an ambiguous future.
