La Ferme du Pendu

(The Farm of the Hanged Man) (First showing in the U.S., presented in French with English synopsis provided.) "At one time this would have been almost the definitive French rural melodrama: sex, revenge, lust down on the farm. The Italian cinema tended to take over this genre in the postwar period--at least for export purposes--and after so many years, we have almost forgotten how much a part of French cinema this kind of film used to be. It's a powerful work, reminding us too what a force Charles Vanel (primarily as actor, though also on occasion as director) was to the French film."
