La Spiaggia (The Beach)
Annamaria, a sweet-natured prostitute (played by Martine Carol, French sex symbol of the Bardot era) takes her daughter from convent school on a summer's vacation at a fancy beach resort. At first, she "passes," but slowly her profession comes to light and playtime turns a little nasty. This is pungent, pointedly anti-bourgeois comedy, built out of carefully orchestrated encounters with vacationers who (like Annamaria) are known by their "occupations": the millionaire, the businessman, the existentialist, the "blue countess," a husband, etc. Alberto Lattuada's development from neorealism (e.g., Without Pity) to satire culminated in the sixties with his classic, Mafioso.
