Lady Be Good

Ann Sothern and Robert Young, as married songwriters, co-star with dancer Eleanor Powell in this entertaining musical, based loosely on the Broadway play which in 1924 had given the careers of Fred and Adele Astaire a major boost. Some of the Gershwin tunes from the play are preserved, with others by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein added. "The big song was an interpolation by Kern and Hammerstein, 'The Last Time I Saw Paris,' which won the Academy Award, causing controversy because it wasn't written for the film. Busby Berkeley staged a super-duper 'Fascinating Rhythm' number with Eleanor Powell and seemingly half the chorus boys in America" ("The MGM Story"). Among the cast is an odd assortment of favorite actors - Lionel Barrymore, Phil Silvers, and Red Skelton.
