The Lady of the House (Bariwali)

Exploitation-not political or economic, but rather what the director calls "vulnerability to the predatory instincts of the creative person"-lies at the crux of this remarkable film from Bengal. A spinster resides alone in a dilapidated, shadowy mansion with neither family nor friend for companionship. Her unacknowledged desire for company (and a rising tax bill) prompt her to reluctantly agree to a proposal that her home be used as a location for a movie. She gradually enters the world of the film, drawn irresistably to the director's sensitivity and charm. What the lady of the house does not realize is that charm, like a film, may be an illusion.
