Langston Hughes: The Dream Keeper

"(This) film about the noted poet and writer Langston Hughes, which director St. Clair Bourne describes as 'a narrative performance documentary', covers new ground in American literary and political history by portraying Hughes' career against the times in which he lived and worked. The production was filmed in the U.S., Dakar, Senegal and Paris, France and features such prominent literary figures as James Baldwin, Amiri Baraka, Gwendolyn Brooks and the poet-president, the Hon. Leopold Senghor of Senegal. The script by Leslie Lee is based on the (recently published) book The Life of Langston Hughes by Arnold Rampersad with additional commentary by (other) scholars.... There are also dramatic and musical performances by Max Roach, Novella Nelson, Dianne McIntyre, Olu Dara, Roscoe Orman, David Langston Smyrl, Robert MacBeth and Ed Cherry. The film's music sound track was composed and arranged by Stanley Cowell and performed by Cowell and Abdul Waddoud.... Director St. Clair Bourne, a leading American independent filmmaker, has a reputation as an artist whose work concentrates on the cutting edge of changing cultural and political trends."
