THE LASH OF THE PENITENTES

From old Mexico to New Mexico, the devil's deeds cross all borders. In the stinging exposé The Lash of the Penitentes, a writer travels to the Southwest to investigate the sub-rosa sect of the Penitentes Brotherhood. This legendary cult practiced flagellation and other dire rites as a path toward redemption. Too close to their smarting secrets, the writer is murdered by his houseboy, a Penitente practitioner. Based on an actual event that took place only months before the film was made, The Lash of the Penitentes was hacked to pieces by the Hays Office; tonight's bizarre remnant is all that remains.
