The Last Broadcast
Fact or Fiction was your typical cable-access show. A no-budget, no-brainer bonanza hosted by the goofball duo of Steven Avkast and Locus Wheeler, the show nonetheless had reached cult status among local tube tubers. In an effort to boost ratings, Avkast and Wheeler decided to go "live" from the Pine Barrens of New Jersey where they would uncover the truth about the legendary "Jersey Devil." Accompanied by two fans, Rein Clackin and Jim Suerd, the Fact or Fiction crew entered a scrubby stretch of the Barrens in December, 1995. What happened there became known as the Jersey Devil murders. It took the police two days to find the body parts, several days more to put them back together. In addition to footage excerpted from Fact or Fiction episodes, reenactments, and computer imaging, The Last Broadcast gathers together an assortment of pundits and prevaricators: a forensic pathologist; the homicide detective in charge of the case; a video-enhancement specialist; the program's Web designer, and others. Searching for the truth about this grisly event, The Last Broadcast uncovers the creepy complicity of the media: the devil is in the digits.-Steve Seid
