The Last Trail
"For the record, neither this film nor its totally different George O'Brian sound remake have the slightest connection with the Zane Grey novel on which they are officially based. Although there's plenty of small boy appeal-perhaps, sentimentally, a little too much-it's not really a typical Mix western either in terms of story content. Mix's comedy and tongue-in-cheek action is largely missing this time, and thus it fits more into the more conventional action mould of the Fred Thompson westerns. Not that we need complain: it's beautifully mounted, the action sequences slammed over with verve and genuinely thrilling stunts, and (even in this 16mm print) the essence of Dan Clark's always fine camerawork certainly comes through."
