Lena Horne, Fats Waller, Cab Calloway in Stormy Weather

Bill "Bojangles" Robinson is the star of this film loosely based on his own life. He plays an aging tapdancer who reminisces about his past performances and loves. The vehicle for this series of flashbacks is a special issue of "Theatre World," an obvious "Variety" parody, which is "Celebrating the Magnificent Contributions of the Colored Race to the Entertainment of the World During the Last Twenty-Five Years." The bounty of printed tributes spark many highly exhilarating segues, featuring Lena Horne, as his girlfriend Selina who brings in an enviable rendition of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," and other performers including Fats Waller ("Ain't Misbehavin' ") and his band with Coleman Hawkins on saxophone; a heavily zoot-suited Cab Calloway; the innovative, African and Latin-based choreography of the Katherine Dunham Dancers; and the fabulous Nicholas Brothers, who combine tap dancing with acrobatics and almost steal the show. Robinson himself taps up a storm in this film, which, like Cabin in the Sky, provided Hollywood another "easy" way to employ Black artists-as joyful entertainers-but which remains a singularly entertaining opportunity to see these legendary artists in action.
