Les Amants du Tage (The Lovers of Tage)

Almost certainly the best film of a minor but reliable French director, Les Amants du Tage offers proof positive (if it were needed) that the British are the world's worst linguists. But Trevor Howard makes a major effort as a French-speaking English detective on the trail of Françoise Arnoul, who may or may not have murdered her husband. At the time, it was a typical French import, a little steamier and sexier than its Hollywood and British counterparts. But while its libido seems quite tame today, it still holds up as a well-crafted murder melodrama. William K. Everson
