Les Enfants du Placard (The Closet Children)

Brigitte Fossey and Lou Castel portray a sister and brother who are reunited as adults and resume the intense relationship of their childhood. The children of a destructive marriage that resulted in their mother's suicide, the two spent much of their youth withdrawn into the private world they created together in a closet in the family apartment. Now, Nicholas is a perennial student living a dissolute existence in Paris, while Juliette is married to one of their father's shady business partners. In an attempt to ward off the threatening extremes of their relationship--but experience it by proxy--Juliette sets her brother up with her best friend, with disastrous consequences. “Shot in lush, tropical colors that emphasize the hothouse atmosphere of the narrative, The Closet Children is a cautious, non-exploitative approach to the subject of incest that focuses primarily on the contours of the power relationship involved rather than merely the sexual implications. Benoit Jacquot was a longtime assistant to Marguerite Duras, and the influence of her work is evident in the film.” (Richard Peña, The Film Center, Chicago) Les Enfants du Placard was produced by Stephane Tchalgadjieff, whose other productions include Aida (see Sunday, January 8) as well as films by Duras, Rivette and Bresson, and who visited PFA in June 1983.
