Let Me Rest in Peace
"We met the widowed Mrs. J-zsef Racsk- in Csebony, a small village in southern Hungary, as we were working on the documentary film project entitled The Changing Rural Life. In our first chat with her we realized that herpersonality and life story marked that 76-year-old peasant woman out asthe subject of a film. Her life story abounds in tragedies that springfrom historical catastrophes and momentous social and politicaltransformations, and in personal tragedies that have little to do withthose other ones.... She looks back upon her life with wisdom and asense of humor that show a tinge of resignation. Indeed, her outlook onlife is almost a cheerful one, but she never tries to varnish the truth, she never attempts to paint an idyllic picture, even about the smallestdetail. She is not only an authentic witness of events that affected herlife-she possesses a gift for describing all that graphically, makingher listeners live what she relates.... Mrs. Racsk- died while this film was being made. The shots of her funeral form a sort of frame for the film." Pal Schiffer
