Light-on-Light: Projection Performance

In this special program, filmmaker Luis Recoder will present a series of recent works; rather than simply letting the films unspool in the usual fashion, the artist himself will work in the projection booth along with PFA projectionist Craig Valenza to present a site-specific performance. A former UC Berkeley Film Studies student, Recoder promises “an evening of pieces, observations, notes, demonstrations, fragments, and other curious phenomena in and around 35mm projection.” His investigations include changing aspect ratios and lenses, moving the projector itself to create a mobile frame, using water or the artist's own hand to redirect light, and even dispensing with film altogether. Recoder is interested in what is usually suppressed or, as he says, “screened out” by cinema. He explores “the shadows of shadows, the light of light” to revel in the very essence of cinema and to open up the relationship between spectator and screen. Tonight's program will include The Optic Curve (2003, Silent), Still Succession (2001–03, Double projection), Aspectos Racional (2001–03, Silent, Double projection), and Liquid Light (2001–03). Recoder is in residence this fall at Headlands Center for the Arts.
