Light Years, Light Years Expanding and Field Study #2

In conjunction with our series of Swedish Women Directors, we welcome Gunvor Nelson, born and reared in Sweden. She has worked in the U.S. since the sixties and is one of the Bay Area's preeminent filmmakers. Many of Nelson's films are reflections of her Swedish memories and sensibilities (reinforced by biannual sojourns to Stockholm), conveying a raw, mystical sense of nature. "Light Years (1987, 28 mins, B&W and Color) and Light Years Expanding (1988, 25 mins, Color) continue to develop the concerns and techniques begun in Gunvor Nelson's Frame Line (PFA 11/83), in which she blended collage animation with highly textural live-action material to create a haunting evocation of her displacement from her native Swedish culture. Using a concentrated and carefully controlled series of moving color images of the Swedish landscape as its foundation, Light Years becomes a tapestry of change as experienced through constant motion and a personal reflection on the filmmaker's memories" (Steve Anker, San Francisco Cinematheque). Field Study #2 (8 mins, Color) is a work-in-progress.
