Liliom plus Hollywood on Parade
“Liliom, Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnar's 1909 fantasy about the life and death of a rascally carnival barker (for him, Eternity begins with an appearance in a heavenly police court, whose judge gives him one day to return to earth to redeem himself) is most familiar to modern American audiences as the inspiration for Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1945 musical Carousel. Borzage's non-singing version transcended the visual limitations of the early talking screen with beautifully stylized sets, breathtaking special effects (in this film, Liliom journeys upward through the clouds on a heavenly express train), and some of the director's characteristic long tracking shots.” Charles Hopkins, UCLA Film Archives
