A Little Bit of Freedom

Born in Karakocan, Turkey, of Kurdish descent, director Yüksel Yavuz has lived in Germany since 1980. An alumnus of Hamburg's Academy of Fine Arts, he has made numerous short films and documentaries and the acclaimed feature The April Children (Aprilkinder, 1998). A Little Bit of Freedom is his second feature.

(Kleine Freiheit). In an immigrant community, life is its stories; the past lives in the present and often determines the future. Yüksel Yavuz creates an immersive portrait of such a world through the experience of Baran (Cagdas Bozkurt), a sensitive Kurdish teenager. Having come to Hamburg following the arrest and certain death of his parents in Turkey, Baran awaits asylum. In the meantime he hides in plain sight as a bike delivery boy for a Turkish cafe, a job that takes him, and Yavuz's freewheeling camera, on a daily tour of high and low-a literalization of his life on the run, even amid the unsettled Kurdish community. Baran's breakaway friendship with another illegal, a young gay African with big dreams financed on the streets, shows that you can take the boy out of the village, but the lessons of betrayal and fierce compassion learned there are not left behind.
