Klein's brilliant portrayal of Little Richard captures "America's black superman" attempting to resolve the conflict between his divine calling and profane success. Acting on advice from God, Little Richard walks off the film yet is barely missed as Klein quickly shifts the focus from the man himself to his status as cultural icon (comically evidenced in the cult of impersonators, hangers on, and fans Klein uncovers).
