Live Performance by Etna Street Heretics and Films: Step Style, Georgia Sea Island Singers, and Qawali-The Sabri Brothers
Etna Street Heretics Holly Tannen and David Morris present traditional May songs, accompanied by guitar, cello and dulcimer. (30 mins) Step Style A cross-cultural study of leg and foot movements in dance styles throughout the world, connecting them to the productive activities and social structures of the given society. (1980, 29 mins, Color, Print from Extension Media Center) Georgia Sea Island Singers Filmed by ethnomusicologist Bess Lomax Hawes on St. Simons Island off the Georgia Coast. Pure spirituals are sung as they were over 100 years ago. Two men and three women begin each song without accompaniment and then later are accompanied with a tambourine, a broom-handle on a board, and dancing. A film by Bess Lomax Hawes. (1965, 12 mins, Print from Extension Media Center) Qawali-The Sabri Brothers "Qawali is a popular form of what might be called gospel music in the Muslim tradition, wherein a group of men sing and are backed by a rhythmic chorus, using the music to 'transport themselves to union with God'. Originating from Persian Sufi chants and influenced by Hindu bhajans, Qawali has a strong following among the poor of North India and Pakistan. The Sabri Brothers, one of the most celebrated groups of Qawali musicians, were recorded live at a concert in Karachi, Pakistan in March 1986" (S.F. Int'l Film Festival '87).
