Living on Velvet

Kay Francis and George Brent star in this drama of “real” and chosen identities. Brent plays a victim of a plane crash who remains in a prolonged state of shock, during which time he decides to live as if there were no tomorrow. He marries his best friend's girlfriend, who sets about making him “normal.” He refuses to conform, and she leaves him. Only a tacked on happy ending mars the neat structure of this first-rate scenario sparked with brittle dialogue and directed by Frank Borzage, of whom French film historian Georges Sadoul writes, “His lovers are rarely isolated from their environment, but are carefully depicted as part of their times, most commonly crisis-ridden America.”
