THE LOST FILM
The 1999 film from Lebanon Around the Pink House showed in many international film festivals, including San Francisco. But when it traveled to Yemen, the print mysteriously disappeared, somewhere along the politically fraught North to South route. The Lost Film is the directors' search for their stolen film in a country where cinema seems barely to exist in the minds of people, yet the earliest still photographer, now blind, keeps all his images in his head; where a canister has more value than the film inside, yet a cinema archive is lovingly tended. Joreige and Hadjithomas have made a probing experimental documentary out of the bits of their film they retain: the presence of an absence.
