The Lost Tribe
A psychological thriller with roots, perhaps, in the intricate plots of the Carol Reed films of the forties, or even in Hitchcock, The Lost Tribe has a look all its own as it takes its unsuspecting protagonists (and viewers) into the remote New Zealand wilderness known as the Fiordland. There, anthropologist Max Scarry seems to have disappeared. Caught up in a search for a mysterious “lost tribe” and given to wild excursions, Max is unable to alarm even his wife Ruth (Darien Takle) or twin brother Edward (John Bach) with his disappearance. It remains for his daughter, who has inherited his prescient powers, to sound the call. As the search for Max begins, Edward's own life takes a very weird turn as he is accused of the murder of a prostitute. How this connects with Max's disappearance, and how Edward and Ruth are drawn into the depths of a wilderness they never imagined existed, is the basis for a fine, engrossing mystery. Winner of the special jury prizes at Sitges and Orleans Film Festivals, 1983.
