For the Love of It: Amateur Movie Clubs of the Bay Area

The word "amateur" comes from amare, to love. Once there were thirteen amateur movie clubs in the Bay Area; three, the Westwood Movie Club, Peninsula Video Makers, and San Jose Movie/Video Makers, still thrive. Historical photos (some of the clubs date back sixty years) reveal rooms packed with people, young and old, eager to see the latest amateur productions. Now the gatherings more often number ten to twenty, and almost everyone is over sixty, but the love of moviemaking still abounds. From lamenting the expense of film prints, to demonstrationing the latest digital camera, to enthusiastically received film and video exchange nights, amateur movie club meetings are a spirited reminder of the pleasure of pursuing hobbies. Tonight we present a selection of films and videos from the Bay Area movie clubs. Their subjects include a grandmother making her two frittata recipes, a trip home to Italy for a local festival, a portrait of a house being moved down too narrow a street, and the adventures of a spider and wasp.
