Love Letters of a Nun (Cartas de amor de una monja)
"Imagine...the possibilities of the story: a mother superior in a Carmelite convent in 17th century Spain--that is to say, with the Inquisition in full swing--discovers, through a murder and the sexual hysteria of one of the novices, the relativity of the vows of chastity, and the presence of God everywhere, including in carnal love. Her confessor arrives at the same conclusion, and together they attempt to overcome in secret their fears and repressions, living out an intense love story. Grau approaches his story with extraordinary tact. His characters are two intelligent people, coerced by the intolerance of their times, cowardly, but capable of throwing a long series of taboos out the window. They are rich characters, not exploited as models but rather explored in an intimate fashion, one more sentimental than moralizing" (El Noticiero Universal, translated from the Spanish by Joanna O'Connell).
