Love Story (U.S.: A Lady Surrenders)

"Love Story was the first of Rank's highly touted Eagle Lion films (designed to be Prestige and Art films only) to be resolutely commercial and an obvious star vehicle. Like the American film of the same name (no remake, but with a similar bittersweet thread running-or unraveling-throughout), it was a huge box-office hit at the time, unusual in that it was both escapist yet clearly related to wartime conditions. Lockwood is an (apparently) dying pianist, Granger is (apparently) going blind, and Patricia Roc adds complications that are underscored by the thundering 'Cornish Rhapsody', one of those piano concertos that competed with the blitz in so many British wartime movies."
