Love's Debris
"There is no voice without love, and the singing voice is the highest possible expression of love," observed Werner Schroeter, filmmaker, opera and stage director. To explore this idea, Schroeter invited several legendary divas-among them, Anita Cerquetti, Martha Mödl, and Rita Gorr-to a thirteenth-century French abbey where each chose an aria to perform that would expressively communicate some aspect of her life. Between rehearsals, Schroeter and crew scrutinize the singers as they wander through the abbey's gardens, reception rooms, and performance arena. The singing is joyous, the divas monumental, but Schroeter is looking for an alchemy beyond the voice. Along with interviewers Isabelle Huppert and Carole Bouquet, he provokes conversations that are answered, in part, through song, but also through the divas' quiet reflections. When the final note fades, Love's Debris is a dreamy meditation about music, aging, and love.
