Mabo: Life of an Island Man
This profile of a man and his struggle to reclaim traditional-that is, precolonial-land rights in Australia has the bittersweet effect of bearing witness to untimely justice. In the case of Eddie Mabo, his death only shortly preceded the landmark court decision which established the validity of native people's claims for land. Trevor Graham, who had worked with Eddie Mabo in an earlier film (Long Bilong Islanders, 1989), was able to draw on long-term relationships with the family in order to craft a touching remembrance of a man who, while obsessed with an island from which he had been expelled, waged a fight with pride and humility, force and grace, clarity and confusion.-Thor Anderson
