Macao, L'Enfer Du Jeu

Admission: $1.00

Completed just before the war, this French film was partially re-shot by the Nazis so that Erich Von Stroheim could be replaced in a main role by the more acceptable Pierre Renoir: somehow, a cut-down and dubbed print of the original Stroheim version was shown in England and on American TV under titles such as Gambling Hell, Dangerous Cargo, and The Mask Of Korea (in which print references to the Macao locale were all changed to Korea). William K. Everson has at last discovered a print of the full-length, French language original version (with German subtitles) of this very curious work, a drama set against the gambling and arms-smuggling background in Macao.
