Mademoiselle Docteur and Secret Lives
Erich von Stroheim in
Mademoiselle Docteur
Dita Parlo is a German spy in Salonika who falls in love with British officer John Loder. “A remake of a French film by G. W. Pabst, this is a cheaper but commendably simpler version, cutting away much of the dead weight, and combining two (or possibly three) of the original characters into the one master-spy role played by Erich von Stroheim. Greville idolized Stroheim, whose only British film this was, and later directed him in a film he had written specifically for him. Stroheim was allowed, even encouraged, to make his own directorial contributions too, and several acknowledged Stroheim ‘bits of business' are quite evident. The wonderful Dita Parlo repeats her role from the original. (U.S. version, slightly edited, released as Under Secret Orders.)” William K. Everson
