The Man Who Could Work Miracles
H. G. Wells' follow-up to Things to Come was a more whimsical film fantasy drawing on the miracle of cinema in some marvelous special effects. Again, Wells tests mankind's readiness for Utopia and finds it sorely lacking. Roland Young is George McWirter Fotheringay, a timid draper's assistant singled out by the Gods to be a human guinea pig. He is granted omnipotence over all material things (but not, sadly, over affairs of the heart). Fotheringay's intentions are noble but various sectors of society-from the Church to big business-buttonhole him for all manner of vulgar aggrandizement and profit. Meanwhile, a clergyman plans to coerce the miracle worker into ending war and creating a Utopia, while a fanatical ex-Army colonel (Ralph Richardson, nicely cast) vows to have Fotheringay purged. The amazing conclusion features a heartfelt "socialist tirade" (Variety) and a sweeping indictment of world leaders.
