Memorabilia and 9 Years Behind the Wheel
Diary and narrative combine in the films of Edward Jones to draw the viewer into one man's very personal impressions of his life, his family and friends: these films are intimate but not exclusive. What at first seems casual-the raw material of journal-like entries on film-actually has a very deliberate structure and a rhythmic pacing, out of which a wonderfully fresh storytelling quality emerges. Thus in Memorabilia, for instance, it is not Ed Jones, the narrator, who is the protagonist but his grandmother, who emerges as a full and unique character at the hub of a circle of family and friends and at the center of Ed's consciousness. Jones, a Bay Area filmmaker, won awards for both of tonight's films at the Ann Arbor Film Festival. Nine Years Behind the Wheel has been invited to the Melbourne Film Festival '87. "Memorabilia and 9 Years Behind the Wheel are films that I made more or less about myself and the world I live in, but my intention was to make films that would be of interest to anyone, to the world at large, not just people who know me. Memorabilia was shot on military surplus film purchased out-dated at pennies on the dollar; 9 Years Behind the Wheel was shot on film thrown away by television stations when they switched to video for news gathering. Sneering ad-agency types might snort, 'but they're just home movies!' I'd be hurt to the quick, but I would be quick to contest the 'but'." Edward Jones Memorabilia (1981, 50 mins) "is about my grandmother's family with an unabashed emphasis on one member's interests and friends, mine.... Like all films, this movie is mainly about the passage of time; old people grow older and eventually die, babies are born and age into childhood...and consolation and transcendence are sought through celebration and art." (E.J.) 9 Years Behind the Wheel (1986, 44 mins, Color): "Scenes from the dark side featuring one man's struggle to get off the night shift. Shot in and around a San Francisco taxi, mostly at night."
