The Message

Taiwanese director Chen Kuo-fu and Mainland Chinese director Gao Qunshu team up with some of the biggest actors in Chinese cinema to deliver this suspenseful, entertaining spy thriller about WWII-era Chinese spies up against the might of the Imperial Japanese Army. In Japanese-occupied Nanjing, a Japanese colonel suspects that “the Phantom,” a mole responsible for leaking secrets to the resistance, is somewhere within his intelligence department. He soon gathers up five suspects for interrogation, and plans to break them by any means necessary. Lavishly recreating forties-era Nanjing and its atmosphere of deceit, seduction, and intrigue, The Message boasts stunning performances from its lead actresses, Zhou Xun (Equation of Love and Death; Suzhou River) and Li Bingbing (The Forbidden Kingdom); both were nominated for Best Actress at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards, with Li eventually winning.
