Michael's Death (La Muerte de Mikel)
“Michael's Death combines ideas about the repression of the Basque people in Spain with ideas about the repression of homosexuality in that country. In the end it seems that similar attitudes have affected both minority groups. The protagonist of the film, Michael, belongs to both and is forced to hide his connections with them. The film starts with the funeral following his mysterious death with various factions claiming him as their own. We look back across his life to see what actually happened. This is the final film in a trilogy by Basque director Imanol Uribe exploring the social and political problems of the Basque people today, following the earlier El Proceso de Burgos and La Fuga de Segovia (see July 10). It stars Imanol Arias as Michael trying to tread two difficult paths at the same time despite a domineering mother, a girl whom he once assaulted, a transvestite associate, and an intimate doctor friend.” Filmex '84
