Midnight Rehearsal (Hatasvadaszok)
With this corrosive first feature, director Miklos Szurdi has evoked critical comparison with the work of such Polish directors as Andrzej Wajda and Agnieszka Holland for his utilization of a theater troup stranded in the hinterlands as a microcosm of a society in disrepair. To please an aging writer, a provincial theater company has decided to mount his play, “The Jacobins,” written thirty years earlier. From his hospital bed, the writer proclaims his excitement about the project. However, the theater director's initial enthusiasm has been considerably dampened by warnings by the authorities against ever producing the play. When the suddenly revived playwright promises a trip to the theater, quick manoeuvering and a midnight rehearsal produce the illusion that the play is, indeed, going on.
