Mike Kuchar's Feverish Spell
Maker of over fifty 8mm, 16mm, and video works, the bicoastal champion of no-budget, underground filmmaking Mike Kuchar has mused, "When you decide to make movies, you are entering the realm of conjurers, alchemists, psychics, and just plain voodoo!...I find it hard to remember how I made most of my films because I become stricken with a feverish spell, in some sort of trance state which won't let go until it runs its course and the movie is completed....You can't question such things. You just do them." Experience Mike Kuchar's wondrous spells with tonight's selection of his recent work in a myriad of styles, made with friends and eager fans, and including a saucy image or two for adult eyes only.-Kathy GeritzCandy Colored Evil (2001, 5 mins): Punctured eggs and metallic sourballs punctuate this chronicle of Mike's visit with members of an obscure punk band. The Stranger in Apartment 9F (1999, 20 mins): One in a series of teleplays about "lonely hearts" looking for "Mr. Right" in all the wrong places. Tryst (1998, 7 mins): A brief and breezy picture poem inspired by painted lips. Statue in the Park (1995, 20 mins): Statue in the Park was concocted around some rumor about a monument located in a Brooklyn park. I Face the Night (2001, 20 mins): Neurosis and melancholy erupt at midnight in this most recent teleplay.-Mike Kuchar
