Million Dollar Mermaid
Esther Williams, the forties' most glamorous mermaid, swam her way into the Technicolor musicals of the fifties. Here she reenacts the victories of Channel-swimmer Annette Kellerman, who made her biggest splash in show biz, thus allowing Busby Berkeley a stage for two no-holds-barred production numbers in a recreated New York Hippodrome. The most spectacular is a fire and water extravaganza, replete with costumed naiads and Technicolor smoke. The fountain sequence, with Williams doing a swan dive from atop a forty-foot-high geyser, is not bad, either. And Kellerman's scandalous introduction to 1920s society, the one-piece bathing suit, is as nothing compared to Williams' chain-mail suit composed of 50,000 gold flakes!
