IN THE MIRROR OF MAYA DEREN
Documenting the rich and complex life of Maya Deren, the enormously influential filmmaker, advocate for poetic cinema, writer, ethnographer, and dancer, is a daunting task. The meticulously researched In the Mirror begins as archivist and filmmaker Jonas Mekas opens a can of unseen outtakes and predicts some interesting discoveries. And indeed this beautifully constructed film is a treasure trove of snippets of discarded film experiments and clips from Deren's celebrated films. Interwoven with these are observations by Deren's contemporaries, including Stan Brakhage, Katherine Dunham, Alexander Hammid, Judith Malina, and Amos Vogel, as well as rare archival material and Deren's documents of Haitian music and voodoo. We also hear recordings of Deren invoking the importance of cinema as an art. Her own experimental films of the forties have influenced several generations of filmmakers, and the course of modern cinema, with their evocation of a woman's inner life, their radical editing, and their personal vision.
