Costa-Gavras is the master of the political thriller. He gained international prominence in 1969 with his award-winning film Z, a daring indictment of the military junta in his native Greece. The Confession (1970) treated a Communist witch-hunt in Czechoslovakia; State of Siege (1972), the kidnapping-murder of a CIA agent in Uruguay; and Special Section (1975), the Vichy government's treatment of “enemies of the state.”
Missing, Costa-Gavras' latest suspense thriller, is again an indictment of a repressive political regime. It is based on a true incident that occurred in Chile during the 1973 coup; but the film is set in an unnamed South American country. “There is a feeling that it could happen anywhere,” the director has said. Jack Lemmon is featured as a father searching for his missing son, accompanied by his daughter-in-law, played by Sissy Spacek. Costa-Gavras creates a tight web of political intrigue and mounting danger, while developing several complex character relationships - father/son, father/daughter, wife/husband - around a missing person.
Appearing with Costa-Gavras will be producer Edward Lewis, whose many feature films include Lonely Are the Brave, The List of Adrian Messenger, and The Fixer. Costa-Gavras and Lewis will address the audience following the film.
