Mix-Up
The French filmmaker journeyedto Nottingham, England, to explore the real story behind a newspaper clipping about two babies who hadbeen switched at birth and raised by the wrong parents. As if by a subconscious magnet, the families, whomet in the hospital, remained friends, and only twenty years later did the mothers admit what they hadsuspected all along. The story has its loony side and the characters involved definitely have theirs. Romandplays with this, involving her subjects in the storytelling process: they pose for her, eerily reenactscenes, analyze and generally distance themselves (and us) from the trauma. When Romand draws us backin, the impact is powerful. The offbeat tale with shades of Monty Python is revealed for its Shakespeareancontours: the story of two changelings, one accepted and adored, the other kept at bay all her life; and twomothers, one seemingly unconcerned about identity, the other obsessed by it.
